Dirt, Rock & Timber

The Crew North Idaho Trusts To Break Ground

From the first tree down to the final grade, Improvements Unlimited handles the hard, unglamorous work that every panhandle project starts with.

Building in North Idaho is its own kind of challenge. Steep, timbered ground. Rock you do not see until you are in it. Long driveways back to homesites in the trees. Deep frost, heavy snow load, and a building season that does not wait around. A crew that does not understand this country ends up with washed-out roads, cracked pads and drainage that fails the first hard winter.

That is not how Duane Ricker works. Improvements Unlimited is a locally owned, owner-operated outfit built on a simple reputation across Sagle, Sandpoint and the wider panhandle: show up, work hard, and do it right the first time. A perfect 5.0 across 89 Google reviews did not happen by accident. It happened one honest job at a time.

Why Improvements Unlimited

Heavy Iron. Local Roots. Honest Work.

Anybody can rent a machine. What you are really hiring is judgment: knowing how to hold a road on a grade, how deep to trench, when the ground is too wet to work, and how to read a wooded site before the first tree comes down. That judgment is the difference between a job that lasts and a callback next spring.

  • The owner runs your job. Duane Ricker quotes it and runs the iron on it.
  • Idaho licensed. Registered Contractor RCE-45870, so you are covered.
  • Panhandle know-how. Timber, rock, frost and snow load, we build for it.
  • Start to finish. Clearing, roads, utilities, foundation and final grade, one crew.
  • A reputation that travels. 5.0 across 89 reviews in a small, word-of-mouth market.

Built For This Country

Excavation That Understands North Idaho Ground

Good site work is invisible when it is done right and impossible to ignore when it is done wrong. It is the layer nobody sees once the house is up and the driveway is graveled, and it is the layer that decides whether all of it lasts. In the panhandle, that starts with respecting the timber, the rock and the water.

Timber & Terrain

Steep, wooded, root-bound ground is the norm here. We clear with care, hold roads on real grades, and shape sites so they drain and build clean instead of sliding or eroding.

Rock You Cannot See

North Idaho hides rock and hardpan just under the surface. Experience and the right iron are what keep a dig on budget instead of hitting ledge and grinding to a halt.

Frost, Snow & Runoff

Deep frost, heavy snow load and spring melt punish shortcuts. We bury utilities deep, crown and culvert roads, and build drainage that carries water where you want it.

None of this is glamorous. It is dirt, rock, water and grade. But it is the foundation, literally, of every project we touch, and it is why folks across Bonner, Boundary and Kootenai counties keep our number. When the ground has to be right, you do not want the cheapest machine in the county. You want the crew that knows this country.

A Closer Look

Every Service, Explained

Here is what each service actually involves, and why it takes a crew that knows North Idaho ground.

Excavation & Grading

The foundation of everything we do. We dig, cut, fill and shape ground to precise grades for building pads, driveways, drainage and site prep. On the rocky, root-bound, uneven ground common across the panhandle, that means the right iron and an operator who can read what is under the surface before the bucket moves. Road & Driveway Building

This is where Improvements Unlimited shines. We cut and build gravel roads and driveways through timber and up grades, shaping the subgrade, crowning for drainage, installing culverts and laying a compacted rock section that survives freeze-thaw, log trucks and mountain runoff. A long driveway back to a homesite in the trees is our bread and butter. More on roads & driveways →

Land & Lot Clearing

Turning a raw, wooded parcel into a clean, buildable lot: removing brush, stumps, slash and debris, and shaping the ground so your build can start. We clear with care for what you want to keep, and haul off or pile what you do not. More on land clearing →

Tree Clearing & Forestry

Selective tree clearing, thinning, defensible-space work and brush removal, done responsibly on forested North Idaho property. We open up building sites, driveways and views while respecting the timber and the terrain. More on tree clearing →

Foundations & Site Prep

Digging and prepping so what you build sits solid: footings, basements, crawlspaces and compacted pads built to hold on Idaho soils. We coordinate with your builder and hit the grades so the concrete crew keeps moving. More on foundations →

Utilities

Water, power and utility trenching set right and buried deep enough for the panhandle winter. Clean trenches, proper bedding, careful backfill, and locates called before we dig, every time. More on utilities →

Septic Systems

Most rural North Idaho property runs on septic, and it has to be permitted and installed by the book through Panhandle Health District. We install to the approved design, from tank to drainfield, bedded and backfilled to last. More on septic systems →

Site Development & Landscaping

Start to finish site work: taking a project from raw ground through clearing, roads, utilities and foundation to final grade and landscape prep, all handled by one crew. The name says it, we do the improvements, all of them. More on site development →

The Name Says It

Start To Finish, Under One Roof

Improvements, unlimited.

A lot of projects in the panhandle stall because they take three or four different outfits to finish: one to clear, one to build the road, one to dig the foundation, one to trench utilities. Every handoff is a delay, a scheduling headache, and a chance for the next crew to blame the last one.

Improvements Unlimited was built to erase that. We handle the whole ground-up sequence in house: clearing the timber, cutting and building the access road, digging and prepping the foundation, trenching water and power, setting the septic, and grading it all out to a finished, buildable, drainable site. One crew, one number, one standard from the first tree down to the last pass with the box blade.

For you that means less coordinating, fewer surprises, and a single accountable owner, Duane, who stands behind every phase. It is why folks hand us the whole project instead of just a piece of it, and it is how a small Sagle outfit earned 89 five-star reviews.

Good Questions

Excavation FAQs

What areas do you serve?

We are based in Sagle and work throughout the North Idaho panhandle: Sagle, Sandpoint, Ponderay, Dover, Priest River, Bonners Ferry, Coeur d'Alene and the rural property across Bonner, Boundary and Kootenai counties. If you are nearby and not sure, call (208) 208-7777.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Improvements Unlimited is an Idaho Registered Contractor, RCE-45870, owner-operated by Duane Ricker. You are working with a legitimate, accountable local business.

Can you build a driveway or road back to my property in the trees?

Absolutely, that is some of our favorite work. We cut and build gravel roads and driveways through timber and up grades, with proper crown, culverts and a compacted rock section built to hold through the panhandle winters. See our Road & Driveway Building page.

Do you clear land and remove trees?

Yes. Land and lot clearing and tree clearing are core services. We turn raw, wooded parcels into clean, buildable sites and open up driveways, building pads and views, clearing with care for what you want to keep.

Do you install septic systems?

We do. Most rural North Idaho property runs on septic, which must be permitted and installed to an approved design through Panhandle Health District. We handle the install from tank to drainfield. See Septic Systems.

How do I get an estimate?

Call or text (208) 208-7777, email iullc@yahoo.com, or use our contact form. For most jobs we will want to see the site, then you get a clear, free written estimate.

Do you work in winter?

We do, when conditions allow. North Idaho winters are real, and frozen or snow-covered ground means some work is better left for a thaw, but clearing, hauling and certain site work carry on much of the year. We will always give you a straight read on whether your project should go now or wait for better ground.

How soon can you start?

It depends on the season and how booked we are, but because we are local and owner-operated we move quickly. Call (208) 208-7777 and you will get an honest timeline, not a stall. For time-sensitive work, tell us and we will do our best to get to it fast.

What kind of equipment do you run?

We run a versatile fleet sized for panhandle work: excavators for digging and foundations, dozers and loaders for road building and clearing, and trucks for hauling material in and out. Matching the right machine to the job is how we keep your project efficient, whether it is a tight wooded lot or a long road up a grade.

Do you call utility locates before digging?

Every time. We honor Idaho Dig Line (811) locates before any trenching or excavation. It protects you, it protects us, and it is simply how a professional, licensed crew operates.

Who We Work With

One Crew For Every Kind Of Panhandle Project

Site work touches almost every project that starts with raw ground. We scale the same standard up or down to fit the job in front of us.

Homeowners In The Trees

Building or improving a place in the woods: a driveway back to the homesite, a cleared and prepped building pad, a septic system, utilities, or final grade and landscaping. The everyday work we do best across Sagle and Sandpoint.

Builders & Contractors

The dirt phase of new construction: clearing, roads, foundation dig, compacted pads, and water, power and utility trenching. When the excavation crew holds the grade and hits the schedule, the whole build goes smoother.

Land Buyers & Developers

Turning raw, timbered acreage into something you can build on or sell: clearing, access roads, rough grading and drainage. We make remote panhandle parcels usable, start to finish.

Rural & Remote Property

Long access roads, culverts and crossings, driveways up real grades, and site work on parcels the valley crews will not drive to. If it needs a road cut to it, that is our specialty.

Iron That Fits The Job

Matching the right machine to the work is half the battle out here. We bring excavators, dozers, loaders and hauling sized to the task, nimble enough for a tight wooded lot and heavy enough to cut a road up a grade or move real material. Clearing, digging, road building, trenching, grading and hauling are all handled in house, so you coordinate one crew instead of chasing three. And because we are based right in Sagle, getting that iron to your site stays fast and affordable, even when the site is a long way off the pavement.
