Foundations & Site Prep
Digging and prepping so what you build sits solid: footings, basements, crawlspaces and compacted pads built to hold on Idaho ground.
Digging and prepping so what you build sits solid: footings, basements, crawlspaces and compacted pads built to hold on Idaho ground.
Everything you build sits on the work nobody sees. The home, the shop, the addition, all of it is only as good as the hole it sits in and the compacted ground beneath it. Excavate carelessly, skip compaction, or ignore what the local soils and rock are doing, and you get the one thing no builder wants: settling, cracks and callbacks after the concrete is poured.
Improvements Unlimited digs foundations and preps sites across the panhandle for homes, shops, garages, additions and outbuildings. We excavate to the grades and dimensions your plans call for, keep excavation safe and workable, and build compacted pads that carry the load for the life of the structure.
We work closely with builders and owners to hit the numbers on the plan and stay ahead of the pour schedule, because a foundation dig that is late or off-grade holds up every trade that comes after it.
- Footing, crawlspace and basement excavation to plan
- Compacted, engineered building pads
- Structural fill placement in controlled lifts
- Rock and unsuitable-soil removal
- Foundation drainage and positive site grading
- Controlled backfill and compaction
- Coordination with your builder and pour schedule
Footings, Basements & Crawlspaces
Digging a foundation is about precision and control. We excavate to the depth and footprint the plans specify, keep the sides clean and stable, and give the concrete crew a level, accurate hole to work in. On deeper digs we manage the walls and spoil so the site stays safe and there is room to form and pour.
North Idaho ground adds its own wrinkles: rock and hardpan that have to be worked through, and water that has to be managed. An experienced operator anticipates both, so the dig stays on schedule instead of turning into a surprise.
Compacted, Engineered Pads
For slab-on-grade construction, shops, garages, many homes, the building pad is the foundation. We strip unsuitable material, place structural fill in controlled lifts, and compact each lift to the density the design requires. A pad built this way will not settle unevenly and crack the slab above it.
Idaho soils make this step non-negotiable. Native ground behaves differently under load, and moisture changes everything. We build pads that account for the material we are actually working with, so what you pour on top stays flat and sound.
Drainage & Backfill Done Right
Water is the enemy of any foundation, so we build drainage into the work from the start, sloping the surrounding grade away from the structure, accommodating foundation drains where called for, and making sure water has somewhere to go besides against your footings.
When it is time to backfill, we place and compact material in a controlled way so the ground around the foundation stays stable and does not settle into a trench line around your new building. It is the finishing detail that protects everything underneath.
Questions About Foundations & Site Prep
Do you work directly with my builder?
Yes. A lot of our foundation work is coordinated with builders and general contractors. We hit the grades and dimensions on the plans, communicate on schedule, and get the hole ready so the concrete crew keeps moving. We can also work directly with owners on smaller pads and outbuildings.
Why is compaction such a big deal?
Because uncompacted fill settles, and when it settles unevenly under a slab or footing, the concrete cracks. Proper compaction in controlled lifts keeps your foundation flat and stable for the long haul. It is not a corner worth cutting.
Can you dig a basement in rocky ground?
Yes. We excavate basements and deeper foundations here regularly, and we plan for the rock and water that North Idaho ground can hide. We manage the walls and spoil for a safe, workable site and dig to the accurate footprint your plans call for.
