Digging, cut and fill, and precise grading, the foundation under every road, pad and building we help you put on North Idaho ground.

Every project that starts with raw ground starts with excavation and grading. It is the shaping of the earth itself: cutting down what is too high, filling what is too low, and grading the result to the exact slopes a driveway, building pad or drainage plan needs. Done right, it disappears under everything you build. Done wrong, it shows up as settling, cracking, ponding water and washed-out ground.

Improvements Unlimited handles excavation and grading of every size across Sagle, Sandpoint and the wider panhandle. As a licensed, owner-operated outfit, we bring the right iron and, just as important, an operator in Duane Ricker who can read what is under the surface before the bucket moves, which matters a great deal on the rocky, root-bound, uneven ground common in North Idaho.

Whether you are prepping a single building pad, cutting a site into a hillside, or moving serious material to make a parcel usable, the fundamentals are the same: read the ground, respect the water, and grade to hold.

Excavation & grading includes:
  • Rough grading and site shaping for new construction
  • Finish grading to tolerance for pads, drives and landscaping
  • Cut-and-fill and hillside site cutting
  • Building pad excavation and compaction
  • Drainage shaping, swales and slope correction
  • Rock and stump removal as ground demands
  • Haul-off of excess material and import of fill

Cut, Fill & Site Shaping

Rough grading is the heavy shaping, cutting the high spots, filling the low ones, and establishing the general contours and elevations a project needs. On the sloped, timbered ground typical here, it is a balancing act of moving material from where there is too much to where there is too little, ideally balancing cut and fill on site to keep hauling costs down.

We read the site first: where water wants to flow, where the building sits, how the finished grades tie into driveways and the surrounding terrain. Then we move earth with a plan, not just a bucket, so the site drains and builds clean instead of eroding or sliding.

Precise Finish Grading

Finish grading is the exact final shaping that gets a site ready for its surface: concrete, gravel, sod or landscaping. Tolerances tighten up here, and a finish grade that is off shows up as ponding water, a slab that sits wrong, or a yard that will not drain. We smooth, level and slope to the final numbers so the next phase goes down clean.

This precision is where experience shows. A pad that looks flat still needs a deliberate, subtle pitch to shed water away from the building. We establish that grade so the site works as well as it looks.

Working North Idaho Ground

Panhandle excavation comes with local realities: hidden rock and hardpan, tree roots and stumps, high water in the spring, and steep approaches. An operator who has worked this country knows when to expect ledge, how to keep a cut stable, and when the ground is simply too wet to work without making a mess that costs more to fix later.

Because we also clear land, build roads and dig foundations, excavation rarely happens in isolation for us. We can take a site from standing timber through rough grade to finished pad without you having to line up separate crews, keeping the whole earthwork phase on one schedule and one standard.

Questions About Excavation & Grading

How much does excavation cost in the Sandpoint area?

Every site is different. Slope, access, how much rock you hit, how much material moves, and the condition of the ground all move the number, which is why we look at the site before quoting. You get a clear, free written estimate with the scope spelled out. Call (208) 208-7777 to set up a look.

Do you hit a lot of rock up here?

Often, yes. North Idaho hides rock and hardpan just below the surface. Experience and the right iron are what keep a dig moving instead of grinding to a halt, and we will give you a straight assessment of what your site is likely to involve.

Can you grade a site so it drains properly?

Yes, and it is one of the most important things we do. Poor drainage is the top reason site work fails here. We shape positive drainage into the grade so water leaves your building and your driveway, not the other way around.
